Bass – Alan Vassberg

Alan Vassberg’s career in Christian music started over 25 years ago singing in the church choir at First Lutheran Church in Edinburg, Texas.  Over a span of 10 years, Alan sang every part from Soprano to Bass (with puberty halting a promising career as a male soprano). In 1987, while attending the University of Texas at Austin, Alan purchased his first bass guitar (a reaction to his brother’s growing skills on the guitar). A steady progression of secular bands ensued, and continues today with the misleadingly named the Psychic Cowboys (nary a psychic nor a cowboy among them). Core members of the Psychic Cowboys (including Alan’s brother, Mark) have been playing together in one form or another since January of 1989. In October of 2000, while on a business trip, Pete Hayes invited Alan to play bass in church “some Sunday.” “Some Sunday” turned out to be “next Sunday” – and many other Sundays followed. A relationship that began at work grew into a spiritual and musical friendship. 2 ½ years later, Pete’s invitation is still bearing fruit. Alan still plays regularly at Westlake Bible Church in Austin, and has had the opportunity to record with artists such as Dawn Smith Jordan and Philip Sandifer. Alan also plays with a Christian Power Rock trio – The Reality Brokers – with Addison’s drummer, Eric Dorris. Alan is married, has a regular day job, and a cat named Mullet.
